Diet Tips for Traveling

How many times have we arrived home from vacation and realized that too much eating out and too little exercise has left us feeling more than a little off kilter? It then takes several days to get back into the swing of things and before we know it, two weeks of skimping on workouts and eating restaurant food has caught up with us. However, with a few tips and a little planning, you can make traveling a little healthier.

If your hotel doesn’t have a gym of its own, check to see if it offers passes to a nearby gym. Pack resistance bands so you can do some resistance training in your room and use plyometric exercises to get your cardio. Walk everywhere you want to go and take the stairs instead of the elevator. These small things will help to keep you from completely derailing your workout routine and will help your body to feel better.

As for nutrition, a great travel trick is to pack plenty of snacks. You may find yourself at the airport for at least half a day or more depending on flight changes. Having granola bars, mixed nuts, apples and packets of oatmeal can be a saving grace when you least expect it. If you have time for a complete meal, grab a grilled chicken salad or something similar -  dressing on the side of course, or have a grilled chicken entrĂ©e with steamed veggies. It is a good idea to find out what restaurants you will be near while on vacation as well. You can often view complete menus online at home - even before you leave for your trip!

If you are traveling by automobile, pack a cooler along with the snacks above. Include snack size fruits such as grapes and cherries; slice vegetables such as cucumbers, peppers and carrots and add in some cherry tomatoes. Whole wheat bread with natural peanut butter or canisters of Protein Powder are convenient ways to get your protein.

With a little research, planning and preparation, you will be well on your way to enjoying your vacation. It’s nice to be able to enjoy the foods of the visiting regions, just choose items that you know you will thoroughly enjoy, so you aren’t wasting valuable calories on mediocre taste. Try these healthy tricks for traveling and make your trip an energizing and refreshing experience.
